Built for self-employed Canadians
Know when GST/HST applies.
Hand your accountant something clean.
MapleBooks watches the CRA small-supplier threshold so you know before you breach it — then keeps your income, expenses, and remittance numbers organized for year-end. Built for Canadian freelancers earning under $50k, not for accountants.
Core feature
Watch the $30,000 line.
CRA's small-supplier rule has two triggers: your taxable revenue over any rolling four-quarter window, and your revenue within a single calendar quarter. MapleBooks tracks both independently and surfaces an alert before you're past the point of mandatory registration.
Rolling four-quarter monitor
Counts taxable revenue across the previous four calendar quarters as CRA defines the window. Alerts appear at 70 %, 90 %, and 100 % of the $30,000 threshold so you have time to act, not just notice.
Single-quarter alert
A separate warning fires if any one quarter approaches $30,000 on its own. Under CRA rules, registration is required on the supply that puts you over — not at quarter end. This alert keeps that deadline visible.
"Most spreadsheets show you a running total. They don't tell you which supply triggered the obligation."
After you register
Once you're registered, the work changes.
Registration means collecting, tracking ITCs, and remitting on schedule. MapleBooks handles the numbers; your accountant handles the advice.
GST/HST quarterly summary
Tax collected, eligible input tax credits, and net amount to remit — summarized by filing period. Export as CSV for your accountant or print the summary yourself.
Provincial tax (PST / QST)
BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec administer provincial sales tax separately from CRA. Quebec registrants also see input tax refund tracking under QST rules. All 13 provinces and territories are supported.
Filing period history
Mark a quarter filed and the numbers snapshot at that moment. Retroactive transaction edits won't silently change what you already remitted.
Year-end
T2125 export, when it counts.
T2125 is CRA's Statement of Business or Professional Activities — the form sole proprietors attach to their T1. MapleBooks maps your categorized expenses to T2125 line numbers, so your accountant sees organized data, not a raw transaction dump.
Categories aligned to T2125 lines
Each expense category corresponds to a specific T2125 line. Advertising, office expenses, motor vehicle — categorized once, mapped automatically.
Print-friendly summary
A clean browser-printable HTML page your accountant can turn into a PDF. No native PDF generator — just a well-structured print layout that works in every browser.
Transaction-level CSV export
Every transaction, with category, date, amount, and GST/HST flag. Your accountant can open it in Excel without asking you to explain a proprietary format.
Honest about scope
What this is not.
MapleBooks is a record-keeping and threshold-monitoring tool. A few things it does not do, and won't pretend to:
- Not tax advice. MapleBooks gives you estimates and organized records. Filing decisions — whether to register, how to claim an ITC, whether an expense is deductible — belong with your accountant.
- Not a budget app. We don't track personal spending, savings goals, or net worth. This is a business-income tracker for self-employed work only.
- Not bookkeeping software. No double-entry ledger. No invoicing. No bank sync yet. We are not trying to replace Wave or QuickBooks Online — we're filling the gap for freelancers who find both too heavy.
